The same thing occurred to me, but the physical condition of the walls of the Passage (as at mid-1800s), the "girdle stones" and "girdling" I mentioned earlier, and the probable intended width of the Passage tend to favour a restrictive fit for the blocks.

My wife, Sonia, is hovering at my shoulder and reminding me that I said I would prepare dinner - about half-an-hour ago ...
