Ritva: "AFAIK, and I don't know much about glyphs, Khepri (the divinity) is written "xpr" and coming into being is written "xprr". Maybe they were also written identically in the beginning."
Both Faulkner and Allen have Khepri (the divinity) pronounced xprr, which is the same pronounciation as 'dung-beetle', xprr.
An exception to this is found in the PTs (P567 (MNNt) PT 624; Sethe Vol 2: 423 §1757b), where Khepri (the divinity) is written xpr, and this can also be found in the BoD.
Both Faulkner and Allen have xpr meaning, 'to come into being', so can you cite where xprr means, 'to come into being'?
R: "As for Allen, whose word you seem to take for gospel, I'd be cautious. He translates completely according to his own view, even if the text doesn't exactly say so. Horakhty translated to Horus in the Horizon (the Sphinx) is a good example!"
I do not take Allen's word as gospel, in fact I have had many questions concerning his translation, and I am naturally cautious about any translation. Translating an ancient language over 4400 years old is obviously tricky, and even experts like Allen have to rely to some extent on other scholars work for help in understanding some terms, so there will inevitably be some room for various interpretations.
However, the example you gave of what you believe is one of his 'mistakes', is not a mistake at all - he does not translate Horakhty as 'Horus in the Horizon - so can you give the reference to where he translates Horakhty, 'Horus in the Horizon'?
Allen translates Horakhty, 'Horus of the Akhet' (Hrw Axti) , NOT 'Horus in the Akhet' (Hrw m Axti) as you wrongly believe he does.
Horemakhet (Gr. Harmakhis), 'Horus in the Akhet' (Hrw m Axti), is found once in the PTs (N 412; PT 677; Sethe Vol II: 489 §2019c), where it reads: G5 (Hrw) G17 (m) G25 (Ax) Aa1 (x) X1 (t) + 'sandy tract' det. N18.
Faulkner: "...He ascends from the horizon, he is greeted by Horus in the Horizon."
Allen: "...he emerges from the Akhet and is greeted by Horus in the Akhet."
As you can see, BOTH Faulkner and Allen translate Hrw m Axti: Horus in the Akhet / Horizon, and BOTH Faulkner and Allen translate Hrw Axti: Horus of the Akhet / Horizon.
'Horus in the Akhet' (Hrw m Axti) designated the Sphinx in the New Kingdom, but as I have shown, this term is also found in the Old Kingdom, and it may even have been the original name of the Sphinx, but this is not certain.
