No one can pretend that a struggle in Afganistan will be bloodless (for either side), but if we behave with respect for the Afgans themselves, and in cooperation with friendly elements, our experience (under the present circumstances) can bear little comparison with that of the Soviets.
What would be our goal? The destruction - utter destruction - of the Taliban. The installation of the Northern Alliance. The eventual rehabilitation of Afganistan. The arrest of Bin Ladin. The massacre of his military assets. The elimination of all terroristic groups still funtioning within Afganistan.
Most or all is achievable.
