Americans ... at least the ones I know ... are more informed than you might think... and the internet which is available to almost every single citizen has certainly been a large help in this ....
We know the problems that the late Soviet Union had with Afghanistan .... we also know that we (once again hindsight is wonderful) were a large ... hell... let's just say HUGE reason that the Soviet Union lost that battle.
Yes... it's a craggy rocky country with a lot of hidey holes... it's also smaller than Texas ....
Excuse me also if I flex a little muscle here .... which is rare for ME to be able to do ... since I can't get the twist off top off on a beer bottle ... but ... a battle against the United States and allies today ... is a hell of a lot different than a battle against a failing superpower that was fast going broke....... especially with the support they received .. which they most assuredly won't be receiving this time
