But, by the same token, if every piece that is brought up that gets broken, is Not used, they would have to bring up a replacement for same, as well as cart the broken bits down.

and there there are the trimmings which could only have been done in place,,,what about all that material?

All I have Dared to suggest here is that the most practical people in recorded history employed everything they elevated .

actually the stress goes as much out as down so that is, ttbomk, completely wrong. That's why you see so much buttressing on medievel cathedrals.
