Manhattanhenge — sometimes referred to as the Manhattan Solstice — is an event during which the setting sun is aligned with the east–west streets of the main street grid of Manhattan, New York City. This occurs twice a year, on dates evenly spaced around the summer solstice. The first Manhattanhenge occurs around May 28, while the second occurs around July 12.

In accordance with the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, the street grid for most of Manhattan is rotated 29° clockwise from true east-west. Thus, when the azimuth for sunset is 299° (i.e., 29° northward of due West), the sunset aligns with the streets on that grid.

We can thus station ourselves on the cross-section of 6th avenue and 42nd street - Manhattan - New York. On 42nd street we see skyscrapers like the Chrysler building and the Bank of America Tower.

We now consider the streets and all the building preserved and we go back in time the day Alexander the Great was born - July 21 356 B.C.. On this day the Sun passes the horizon setting at an azimuth of 299.2 degrees. We thus have the Mahnattanhenge alignment.

This position on the other hand has the exact same latitude as that where Alexander the Great was born - in Pella - Macedonia - Hellas (40.755°).
