Which is why one doesn't draw conclusions from single objects - think what could be concluded from the remains of a plane that had nosedived into a marshy area ! Stratigraphy is rarely uninterrupted level layers - people might have dug cellars, wells, graves, etc, etc which can all cause problems. There is a lot of training and experience required to make sense of things.
