In the video the Geopolymer Institute team only use individual wooden surface as molds on each open side of a new block. On a large pyramid layer that would be only at 2 sides. On the other 2 sides and especially the bottom of each block, the previously poured blocks and layer below act as a mold. The plasticine like paste is poured directly at the existing block. Davidovits also addresses the critic point that pouring directly at an existing block would fuse both together. As it turned out after about one year when the team intentionally demolished the experiment blocks, they found that the blocks didn't fuse together and could easily be separated.

For a large pyramid layer with thousands of blocks you can also use a different pattern of pouring in a checkerboard style. First place hundreds of 4-sided molds only on the "black" checkerboard fields. Then after 2 hours remove the molds and pour in the "white" checkerboard fields, which are now square shaped holes after the mold removal around the newly poured blocks.
