Hi Mark,
The method that you describe is interesting as one of the theoretical methods with which one can find true north.
In fact, there is no need for a tube: you can use the "viewing gap" between two vertically mounted objects (we need to fix only the elongations of the star, but not the culminations). The descending corridors of the pyramids are very suitable for this purpose, since in this case, it is not necessary to create observational instruments of excessive height (the Pole at the latitude of Giza at an altitude of 30 degrees).
However, the "bisector" methods, to which belongs the one proposed by you, cannot explain the correlation of the azimuths of the pyramids with the time of their construction, about what I wrote to you earlier, since "bisector" methods always find direction to the true north (if the Egyptians used some kind of "bisector" method then deviations of the pyramids from cardinal directions would be chaotic, depending only on the quality of observations, and would not form a clearly defined trend, which is observed for the pyramids of the 4th dynasty).
Another difficulty encountered by "bisector" methods is that both elongations of the selected star cannot be available for observation at the same night (one of the elongations will always take place in the daytime), therefore, to observe two elongations, one must conduct two series of observations separated by the period of at least several months. In this case, it is necessary to ensure strict immobility of the observational instruments for the whole period between series. It is also important that the observer must occupy the same position relative to the instrument (it does not matter that this is a measuring pole or viewing gap) in both series.

but I don't disagree that other Old Kingdom pyramids might have been directed at a particular star if you can show a correlation between stars and pyramids assuming a difference of no more than say 5 arc minutes between theoretical values and observed values.
Here is the graph for all the measured (known to me) pyramids of the Old Kingdom:
The relative durations of the kings' reigns are completely taken from the Shaw's (2001) chronology.
I'll calculate the exact values of differences a little later.

Its no use just saying the AE determined true north with enviable accuracy, or dismissing a possible method as more in keeping with the modern mind, because you will just be left with an easy and precise solar method.
If the aim is to explain only the exact orientation of the Khufu pyramid, and to consider this pyramid separately from others, then even most incredible explanations may seem reasonable. You will change your point of view regarding the solar method if you digress from the Khufu pyramid (which has captured the attention of many researchers so that they do not notice other pyramids) and consider the totality of data on all the pyramids of the Old Kingdom.
Alex.
