If you could not fit a plug stone between the slots, why not carve the slots further apart? Why not have the slots actually fit the plug stones you were putting into the chamber, rather than some random regular measurement that ended up leaving you with 14 useless holes on each side of the gallery?

And, once again, why add slots in places where there is absolutely no need for them? (such as on the top of the Great Step).

It refutes the idea. There's little more to say on the subject.
