Hello Lobo and all,
It now occurs to me that:
1) There would not have been enough room for two men to work shoulder-to-shoulder, leaving us with a line of two or more men to apply leverage to the blocks.
Would this have made the task more difficult in some way?
2) Coating the Passage floor with a lubricant would have made the conditions for the workers (is there such a word as a "leverers", I wonder) immediately behind the block somewhat precarious, to say the least - I imagine it would have been like trying to not fall over whilst walking bare foot and unaided down a ski slope.

I realise, Lobo, you are presenting a "What I would do" scenario, and I know I am nit-picking, but there is not enough clearance for the deployment of ropes.
