Hello RLH,

If we allow for the beams being placed at alternate holes (and there's no obvious reason why the AEs would not have done this simple thing), then it is still basically a reasonable idea.
However, I am not convinced that this is what actually happened.
As I have posted elsewhere (I've lost track - I've had a night's sleep since then ), I am currently of the mind that the Grand Gallery and Ascending Passage together is a stylised portcullis system that would not have worked in actuality.
