There's no question that the ancient Egyptians were strongly
religious and practiced magic. I suspect the magic was largely
based on observational knowledge but, of course, it went far be-
yond mere observation and rudimentary science.

But it's also possible that our assessment of them may be highly
biased by the nature of the material that survives. If archaeol-
ologists judge us by what they find in graves their opinion might
be far different than who we really are. This isn't to say that
all knowledge about the pyramid builders comes from such sources,
merely that these sources are dramatically overweighted. Their re-
ligious orientation is visible even in the Palermo Stone, but even
here we don't know that these records weren't maintained by priests.

The average man was too busy working to be driven by religious con-
siderations in all probability. The average man was probably more
concerned with magic than religion.

Those who wish to discount the importance of magic should remember
that in a very real way the Great Pyramid stands as a testament to
magic. It also is representative of their religion but the real
world always takes precedence to magic and religion. I think they
knew this as well. I don't believe primitive technology could buid
these otherwise.
