Hi Wayne,
I have created a slide to demonstrate the idea that G3's Apex was originally intended to be centered at your 'Focal Point'.
It seems to me that this drawing demonstrates that the AEs of the 4th Dynasty were following a plan or 'codex'. I say this because it seems that the quarter-bases of G1 and G2 'remember' the focal point of the original design i.e. Menkaure's intended centre. This is a natural result of the relative locations and dimensions of G1 and G2.
However, it seems that the AEs of the 4th Dynasty had to alter the layout of the plan slightly and moved G3 to the east and north of where it should have been located had they followed the plan to the letter. This was perhaps due to the proximity of the Maadi formation to the south and west which would have been problematic.
I think then it is possible that the design that we find at Giza was layed out with G3 as the starting point, with the locations and dimensions of G2 and G3 following. This does not, of course, mean that the AEs built G3 first - they most probably started with G1 then G2 and by the time they came around to constructing G3 they realised the problem of the Maadi formation and had to alter G3's location slightly.
Regards,
Scott
