The Amarna rulers weren't overthown they died from what appear to be natural causes over about a 15 year period or so. Tut left no succesors so what appears to be a collateral relative named Ay took over, he died an old man 3 years later. Horemhab then took the throne, something that had been denied him for quite awhile (see his coronation statement). He died a natural death leaving no male heirs, so he appointed one of his general who took the throne name of "Rameses" who iirc lived about three years or so but set in motion the 19th dynasty; the rest is history.
