<HTML>Claire,

Thanks for that. So did the west jump when Moscow barked? Perhaps if we had acted more appropriately and begun a "war on terrorism" when this happened over a year ago then the action last week may have even been averted. Why didn't US and NATO forces mobilise against bin Laden and Afghanistan then? We had already pinpointed bin Laden for the WTC bombing in 1993 and the embassy bombings in 1998. Its easy to say with the benefit of hindsight that we should have done something but why did the events of last week have to happen for the US to react at all?

Now it looks almost certain that we'll have another war in Afghanistan which will be brutally violent to all involved. I can still recall the pictures I saw in the papers in the 80s of a Russian soldiers body being used by the Mujahadeen to play their version of polo with (they usually play this using a spear and a dead sheep). Don't believe for a second that they will be any less extreme towards US and British troops. This war will be more violent and terrifying than Vietnam and I think some of the gung ho fraternity (not you of course) fail to see that.

Also note that at the time Russia considered using air strikes but didn't act. They're only too well aware of what may have happened if they'd begun a land campaign. Perhaps they were also aware of the repercussions that attacks on Afghanistan may have had from Chechen rebels on Russia. We'd be very naive to think that a war on Afghanistan will put an end to international terrorism.

KRs,
