<HTML>Or look at the diagram on P 106 of "The Complete Pyramids" by Lehner.
He shows the line connecting the south-east corners of the pyramids but he also shows how the west face of Khufu's pyramid aligns with the east face of Khafre's mortuary temple and how the west face of Khafre's pyramid aligns with the east face of Menkaure's mortuary temple.
At the top of the page is an isometric view which shows that Khafre's mortuary temple was longer in the east-west axis than in the north-south axis but Menkaure's seems to be the opposite; longer in the north-south axis than in the east-west axis.
Because Khafre's mortuary temple is longer in it's east-west axis than Menkaure's this seems to explain why the east-west distance between Khufu's and Khafre's pyramids is greater than between Khafre's and Menkaure's.
Thus it seems that they wanted to "offset" the whole complex (at the western end of the causeway) to the west of what was already there. This suggests that the final plan of that part of the complex; pyramid/mortuary temple was decided at the outset - I, personally, don't find this surprising !
