What Lehner said is:
"Joining the stars the king becomes an akh. Akh is often translated as "spirit" or "spirit state". It derives from the term for radiant light, written with the crested ibis as though the crest transforms the ordinary ibis bird of the ba."
I already know that the dead king becomes Osiris the geyser when he dies so when a respected egyptologist says that That the "spirit" of the dead king is represented by a specific thing then I know that thing may well be related to a rainbow. Osiris' spirit is a rainbow and messenger so why not the exact equivalent's; the dead king? When you further consider that the ternm derives from a word for "radiant light" then the concept is reinforced. The concept that it's the crest that transforms the ibis is Lehner's not mine. If you examione the wording you'll see he either lacks confidence in the conclusion or is simply stating appearances rather than actual known fact.
It's not the crest which leads to the ibis as a representation of the dead king but the rainbows it wears on its back; the rainbow whose shape it resembles.

The colors are visible on its back no doubt because the fine feather tips act as prisms. They are probably triangular in cross section and only the more robust colors are seen where the feathers lie in relative flatness. You'll need a crested ibis feather expert if you want to pursue this but for now simply saying that prisms and water dropplets work in similar ways to create rainbows or as the Pyramid Texts say; "the light scatterer of the sky" and "broad are thy steps of light" and "sky arcs".

Really!!!
You might need to clear this with the ibis first. The pyramid builders certainly seemed to talk about refracted light a lot. They even talked about a circle that encircled the primeval mound! A big prism wouldn't encircle the primeval mound but just color it. And ibis could en"circle" the primeval mound but it doesn't look like an arc in flight.
It's possible all this isn't about rainbows (of course) but every time I add it all up it sure looks like it to me.

No, not this type. I had the general outline of the bird though.

No. Just the two mentions in the PT which are consistent with the idea of rainbows. Indeed, they are one of very very very few things which could be consistent. The PT say that two bulls fight inside an ibis.
