Nine. This was in the entire Land of Horus though which extended
from the Fayuum to Giza. Of course this number varied over time.
There were probably only three main ones at Giza; Isis, Osiris/ Atum,
and Set. Set was demoted to carrying Osiris after a plumbing prob-
lem resulted in Set's greatly increased flow and the death of Osir-
is/ Atum. Perhaps an attemp to divide the output into 14 pieces in-
advertantly caused it to fail and when it was corrected Set had to
carry Osiris from then on. Set was the part of the geysers under
the earth. Isis had no ben ben because there was insufficient water
pressure at the higher elevation (the grotto) 250' to the south.
Of course this is speculation but the PT says there were nine and
they are the children of the sky and the earth. The sky could be im-
pregnated only when she put down her arms (the drilled geysers).

Their origin could be older than mankind or they could have begun as
recently as 15,000 years ago when the mountains sprang up in the aqui-
fer creating carbonated Lake Kivu and tipping any aquifer to the north
toward Giza. When they failed should be much easier to nail down. No
doubt they failed in fits and starts until in a relatively short time
they failed utterly. The odds of a geyser being at any place are ex-
tremely low since these are rare events. The fact that the Egyptians
invented the drill about 3500 BC raises the possibility many many fold.
Of course on need ask why so primitive a society even had the need for
a drill.
It appears this drill is mentioned in the PT;
1968d. It is he who shall break the e[gg], and [loose] the copper,
1969a (N. 758). so that the two followers of the gods, with sharp teeth and long claws, may bring the god forth by his hands.
1969b. Behold, N. exists; behold, N. is assembled;

I've only recently begun working on this question and it's one where my
lack of knowledge and experience in orthodoxy is a major liability. It
appears to me that their Gods (earthly ennead) were all natural phenom-
ena which were anthropomorphized. They couldn't be depicted by their ac-
tual characteristics and even their "human" form was half animal. Since
they couldn't say anything delegating attributes to the God they had to
"talk around it". The sun won't shine because Re' is good each day. Osir-
is can't even lift the stones up as ballast because this is akin to sug-
gesting he had weight. So he sat in the counterweight in his name of Seker
which means "come to me". When he sat the stones came to the pyramid top
where Seker was; they came to him. This made Seker "Chief of Lifts".
This really can be seen in places other than just the Pyramid Texts. At
least I haven't seen drawings of sunsets and street scenes. All these
things are removed from context and displayed independently without any
natural phenomena in them.
I believe this is consistent across the OK and even into later times.
