Under normal (typical) conditions that prevail from the onset of pyramid building season around June 20 the wind will create a high pressure on the west side and a corresponding low pressure on the east side. Since the wind is out of the NW this will also mean high pressure on the north and low on the south. Just as a boat actually experiences high speed than the wind the shafts can easily be "adjusted:" to increase the high and low pressures thus controlling the rate of airflow.

I wish. I believe their purpose was three fold. The primary function was air and a secondary function was to operate a brake. As the cable moved over the outlet it snagged a hook attached to a weight that activated a brake. There was probably yet another function since the shafts are slightly more complex than necessary to accomplish both functions.
I tend to avoid quoting lines that are badly translated or exist in a badly translated utterance and this one is both but I believe it is refers to this and accounts for the weight found in the shaft;
279d. Adjust the cable, traverse the msk.t, hit the ball on the meadow of hapi
This too is a mess;
1060b + 1 (N. 1055 + 49). that N. may eat with his mouth like him who separates wp.sn-wi (the two tuffs (of hair),
1061a (Nt. XXVII 704). and drop with my (or, his) anus like serket
This contains a "pun" with the two tuffs of hair like serket's two parts of an air siphon. Serket sits on air.

Good point.
1394c. the two nomes of the god shout before [the king] as he descends into the earth.
This one is NOT describing his descent from the stars but rather his absorption into the earth as the wdn.t-offering but he must be on earth in order to water the freshly hoed field.
1378b. (as) he ascends to heaven like Montu,
1378c. (as) he descends as B3-ibt.f, as B3-sm.f.
This one IS about his descent to earth.
1245a. N. descends in the lake of Kns.t;
NOT descending to earth but descending to the earth as set or the wdn't-offering. Again though he does this every day.
922b. N. embarks (descends) for life and joy into the boat of re;
922c. N. commands for him those gods who transport him.
923a. Every god shall rejoice at the approach of N.,
923b. as they rejoice at the approach of re‘,
Every day the king appears as the pyramid and every night as a star.
450a. He will rebuild N.; he will cause N. to live every day.
Much of the confusion is caused because his ascent to the stars is what is being celebrated in most of these rituals. His first ascent is the hardest and most emotional because his body is being burned in the iskn, the funeral pyre on the east side top of his pyramid.
It's very difficult to take all of this literally but the fact is that it hangs together literally and it hangs together with the physical evidence as well.
