Hi Lee,
It is a thoughtful read, from my perspective.
I would say I disagree with the observations on Sah, and other aspects of ancient Egyptian interpretations of the sky. I reviewed the sections multiple times to ensure I had removed my personal bias, i.e. perceptions of a certain 'theory' I wish not to name in this discussion.
Thereafter, I feel my disagreement stands; I believe they got 'Sah' right. This may also be applied to Meskhetiu.
I agree that in the strictest definition of 'astronomy', Joanne is quite correct to say the AE did not practice it, rather they interpreted what they observed in a metaphysical way. Surviving depictions are most readily artistic, for instance.
As for decanal insights, this is only lightly touched upon in the book; most of the focus is on a discussion of whether or not modern scholars have gotten the connections right. For example, was a certain planet determined correctly? Have constellations been assigned improperly?
Aside from that, I have a couple of very positive takeaways in that there truly are some hidden nuggets within the work! Prior to reading it, I honestly had no interest in the 'Onomastica' of Amenope, but it now strikes me (and only because she thankfully shines a light on it) as *not* being a list of items, rather only a small surviving portion of a much larger tome. More like an index only. And, something, perhaps, an historian like Herodotus may have had to hand when compiling his later works. Indeed, the introduction to the the text appears on p.37, and it comes across as being very suggestive of more material/data.
I respect Joanne's arguments to the highest degree. In fact, I think everyone should have this book in their library in order to provide a balance and greater field of view on the subject. Readers will find insights into the development(s) of astrology, and some intriguing notes on later manifestations of the genre. The sequence through time of its growth and use are established in a way I have not been privy to before, and thank her for that.
I think if Joanne is lurking she may be able to help more on your question about decans. Is there something specific about them you feel discussing? I think it may be worthwhile to seek out her earlier works as well. There are a couple in the biblio. Don't forget
It's About Time at her academia page.
