There's much less doubt that at least some, if not all, of the later pyramids were intended mostly, if not entirely, as tombs. Records before the first intermediate period are much spottier. Interpretations may be based as much on interpolation and extension as on the data themselves. There simply isn't extensive evidence of anything and much of the physical data is ignored or lying unsought in the desert.
