His account of the visit to the pyramid, and the fact that there was an inscription on it, is surely corroborated by the fact that there was an inscription on Menkaure's pyramid that's since come to light ... The accuracy of the translation of the hieroglyphs given to Herodotus (which he would have had no way of checking) seems very suspect, however.

I do wonder whether the priests who accompanied Herodotus (or the generations of priests before them), unable to read the inscription on the GP properly, but having some knowledge of offering formulae, had somehow got the idea that this, too, must be an offering formula, and translated it accordingly ...
