So ... did some dogs get ill because they ate diseased or toxic fish or sea-creatures suffering from Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)?
But how did the marine life get ill?
Most likely an "algal bloom" - [
www.bbc.co.uk].
And a particularly nasty one in 2008 - [
www.copernicus.eu].
So what's causing these algal blooms? Could they be man-made, as suggested in this 1989 paper: [
www.aqua.dtu.dk]
Might they be the result of oxygen depletion events in the North Sea?
If so, what's causing oxygen depletion events?
Could possibly be a combination of plastic pollution and other factors that are playing havoc with all-important sediments.
So, every time we throw a bit of plastic away, we might be endangering some form of sea-life, wrecking fishermen's livelihoods, and risking the life of someone's pet dog ....
And that's just for starters ...
