and the oil age will end but not for a lack of oil.
That is a famous quote from an address by Sheik Zaki Yamani (former Petroleum Minister of Saudi Arabia) back about 1999 when he predicted the end of the age of oil about 5 years in the future. I attempted to find the full text of the article but could only find partial quotes.

The point is that the age of cheap energy is gone. Oil will be available for centuries, if we can afford it! The increased prices will promote more exploration and more reserves will undoubtedly be discovered. Prices will probably decrease, temporarily!

We found ourselves in this same situation 25 years ago when the price of oil had increased from $4/bbl to $30/bbl over the previous 7 years. Unfortunately back then a recession reduced demand and new production dropped the price back to less than $10/bbl. Also there was a concerted effort by some OPEC producers to keep the price low to prevent development of alternative sources. Hence we blundered through the 80s and 90s in a fools paradise and no economically viable energy sources were developed.

Let's hope we have learned from history and now use our technology to reduce dependence on petroleum.
