YOu misunderstand my point, I think. It's the analytical skills & basic social-behavioral concepts.... integral to the anthropological worldview & aquired via academic study..... that they would be wanting to pick up.
They can READ about Afghanistan anywhere, picking up "lots" of anthropological data. .... without learning to speak Pashto or Dari. They don't need to take college anthro courses for this. It's the MENTAL tools that they need to learn.
BTW, my dad was posted to Afghanistan.... & was there when the Soviets invaded (brought back some dramatic photos!).
