It's been standard operating procedure for the better part of a century (both sides of the pond) to have academics "on retainer", as accessible sources of information relating to intelligence work.

No, think about it for a moment.... languages alone would just let them perpetuate ethnocentric misunderstandings "fluently"
But anthropology is ENTIRELY about the gathering & analysis of information concerning various (usually foreign) human cultures & societies. It's not "ideology" that inspires this choice of (agent) study, it's common sense.
