Is that the exact truth? Maybe - there was much advantage to the Russians in having that become the official story. But even if he had survived and been squirreled away in some dungeon by the Soviets, he'd have died long ago. More than likely, if he'd been captured alive, the Russians would have made him the center of a huge show trial, trumpeting to the world the story of how extraordinarily brave and dedicated Soldiers of Mother Russia had Saved The World from this Mother of All Fascist Monsters - that's the way the Russkies operated back then...
