It does make you wonder why they cast three well-known Chinese actresses to play Geishas. I always thought western productions had the likes of Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh to play ass-kicking, martial-arts masters, not real actresses so to speak. And is Gong Li popular in the west, other than the fact that i've had to watch "Raise the Red Lantern" several times in mandarin classes (guess they decided others film were not educational)? There are plenty of good Japanese actresses to choose from.....and no, not just the girls with stringy hair or distressed mothers from "The Ring" or "Dark water". I would be annoyed if they had three Japanese actresses play three major Chinese roles....but then again this happens all the time...Lucy Liu's hardly Japanese.
