Based on what was occurring in the CC post-Nicean council to that time, I don't think it would be hard to imagine purposeful disappearance. It is my understanding the Cardinals are obliged, under oath, to protect the secrets of the CC. The missing archives could be from the CC themselves or from "political theft".
