My use of
Faustus was an abbreviation of Mann's title, not a reference to Goethe. I referred to John Wood as the translator of a new version of [Dr. Faustus/i] in my first message. As I said, I haven't read, so I can't vouch for it, but the reviews have been generally good. Woods has also done a new translation of
Joseph and His Brothers and here, too, the reviews are very good. Because of my reservations about Lowe-Porter’s stuff, I may just take a look at this one. I hope he’s captured the tone; I think that’s the most difficult thing with Mann, and
