Sorry to say, I much prefer his wit and tendency for sarcasm in his plays. I think that Shakespeare even thought his own poems seemed trite (if I recall, they were often written by request). Hence when he wrote Sonnet 130, he wrote "And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare." The whole poem is about reality and more indicative of real love than anything else.
