Actually it states on the bottom of page 12 the pattern may occur deliberatly or naturally, by design or by accident.

That, in a nutshell, defines the borders of this long running dispute.
Was it by design these spirographers can weave their lines around the pyramids?
Or does the spirography have no resonance with the designers because they never saw it themselves?

I'm reasonably sure the Romanesco Cauliflowers discussed on page 12 in the above link were a naturally occuring design.
