It is not true that Atlantis originates with Plato as often said. While it is true that Plato's text is the source of all subsequent Atlantology, the Atlantis Account itself says that the story came from Atlantis to Egyptian inscriptions/records/tradition to Sonchis to Solon and some generations of passing down to the person who told a group of people that included Plato. Also there are some Egyptian sources that might be the original source such as the Medinet Habu story of the Sea Peoples. There are also some other Egyptian or other nations' sources that might also match. And assuming the story is true there will/must be other sources which will eventually be proven/known to match. Herodotus called the Atlantic ocean/sea the Atlantic before Plato though after Solon. In the Atlantis Account the speakers say a few times that it is true history.
Atlantis was not in "the Mediterranean waters". The Atlantis Account (and also other accounts of Siculus etc) clearly says Atlantis was distant, and was outside the Pillars and in the real ocean not in the small Mediterranean indentation, etc. They were "invaders", conquered upto Tyrrhenia and Egypt/Libya (implied from west of them). Atlas was in westernmost Africa.
People should first objectively and thoroughly look to see if there is (or isn't) a match in world & history for all the details in the text without bending, instead of just discarding a source as supposedly unreliable. I've done this with various sources like the bible, the Atlantis Account, Herodotus, Nennius, etc and I found that they do have good matches in history contrary to assertions that they are "unreliable" etc.
There can only be One true best match for Atlantis in world & history. Though it is possible that the compilers of the Account may have combined in some other traditions like the Flood of the Biblical world. Some people often use a criticism that supposedly a person or place in a text can be found in many places anywhere, but again if the text is true then there can only be one best true match in the world and history.
My findings were that Tiahuanaco & Peru & South America have many stark matches with most of the details of the Atlantis Account. Unfortunately some people keep refusing to accept it as even possible because they keep harping on just a few points of disbelief/dispute/doubt such as they say Atlantis sunk but Andes is high or rose, and they claim the distance is too great and "people first attack neighbors", and one or two other similar sorts of ideas, though I tried to show answers to most of the criticisms they come up with but they just ignore/dismiss/dispute and keep harping on them. I suppose its not very good just putting the correspondence forward here with out giving all the details matches, but there really is a massive amount of text I'd have to post. If anyone wants to know more I'll have to remember/find where I posted my last revised edition of my paper/article, and/or I could try post some matches evidences here.
(An extra addition to the Tiahuanaco thesis is that the Great City of "Asshur" may match both Atlantis city and Tiahuanaco. I've just posted a rough piece about this on the Early Writings Biblical history and criticism forum.)
