Limestone is a sedimentary rock. It's only common sense that the older striking(layers) will be denser. But changes in the environment can also dramatically effect the composition of a given layer on the sea bed. The poor quality stone of the Sphinx's neck and it's parallels on either side of the carved out enclosure are an excellent example of the extreme variations that are found.
as for thread hijacking.....I wouldn't mind half as much if Clacking had anything substantive and NEW to offer.
