Hello Morph,

At the moment I am thinking along the lines of this Well Shaft as having served more than one purpose at different times during the construction of the Pyramid.

It appears to be in sections: from Grand Gallery down and southward to Grotto; from Grotto down and southward to X feet; from X feet down and eastward to lower end of Descending Passage.
And there's the puzzle of the part built, part tunnelled through core blocks section of the shaft between the Grotto and the Grand Gallery.

It's as if it started out as one thing and ended up as something else - with one or more changes in between.

We know from the Descending Passage that we are dealing with experts at tunnelling in a straight line, and over quite a distance distance, too - the bedrock section of the DP is an unnerving 232.5 feet long.
Yet here we have a shaft meandering all over the place.

As I say, I think we are looking at a Shaft that served more than one purpose, and was altered as work on the superstructure progressed.

Question is: what were these purposes?
