The beauty of it was, as I have understood it (and I may be wrong), but that in the attempt to "erase from memory" the Amarna kings, they really only succeeded in erasing it from the minds of the immediate citizens of Egypt... some of which were the same tomb robbers that were very hungry for any king's treasure "on record".
I think this is most clearly pointed out by the fact that Tut's tomb was found underneath a workers' barracks that had been on that same spot since Ramesses II had his workers build it there. And, as you rightfully point out, it wasn't discovered until after 1901.
