I came to appreciate Excalibur a great deal after studying scenes from it presented by a Jungian analyst in a class on Jung and Film at the Jung Center. [Yes, we Houstonians are VERY lucky to have a world class Jung institute that offers so many marvelous classes and workshops of astonishing variety.] Of course, it's not strictly historical.. but then neither are those old Hollywood blockbusters that pretend to be, either. ;-)
So, for great history and biography, I guess I'd go for something like Schindler's List or the story of Anne Frank.
I did just finish watching the first five episodes of Island at War which seemed rather historical. I never knew that Hitler occupied the Channel Islands before this... and it does make Churchill look VERY bad. Maybe he did intentionally prolong the war...
