I would say that laziness and ignorance are easy things in life. My experience with creationists seems to imply that creationism is not so much to do with creation and religion as it is to do with evolution. Think of it as being similar to how people would distort the laws of thermodynamics in order to support their belief in spirits. The more science try to establish some kind of absolute certainty, the more people will come up in arms against orthodoxy. A typical YEC will able to cite all that flood geology BS, but i think most of the people who question evolution are those who don't care enough about the issue to debate about it. Their issues are with science and any idea that there is absolute certainty. Of course, there is no absolute certianty in science anyway, but it's the mysteries they want. Thus, if you ask people about evolution or creation, they will tell you that jury is still out, not because they are biblical literalists, but because they don't know enough about it...."hell, science is never right anyway" kind of perception...
