Indeed, yes (or off-white) -- but not a "brilliant" white. On this gloomy island you need as much help as possible to keep the inside of the house naturally light. I like lots of mirrors around as well, for the same reason -- no, it's not mere vanity! The nice thing about white is that it goes with just about any painting, carpet, furniture....
When I was younger I tried various other things, and I might still be tempted to go for a warm lazured finish in golds and a slight touch of vermillion, but I'd still need to start wiht a white base for the lazure...
