I started smoking because my parents said I couldn't. Half the cricket team smoked and all of the football team. If you didn't smoke you were labeled a fairy. It was hard to spot a fairy in those days. The biggest smoker I ever saw was my neighbour, 60 a day and he often ran out when he saw me. He lived into his eighties. By the time I was fourty I couldn't run, not that it should have mattered. I casually put it down to too much rhubarb. I had a chest x-ray at fifty and my doctor asked me if by any chance I ate rhubarb. As time passed I began to cough in the car and my wife said "shut the window, there's a diesel out there you know" Diesels are worse than rhubarb. I still smoke, I still eat rhubarb and I recently bought a new diesel. Some peaple never learn.
