<HTML>Anthropology is "the study of humanity, in the broadest sense, including social and cultural behaviour, the past, and physical characteristics". (Martin Hall. 1996. Archaeology Africa)
Archaeology all over the world is regarded as a subdiscipline of anthropology. Where the confusion arises is the distinction made in European countries, and those countries like South Africa which follow the European system, is differentiating between archaeology and social anthropology. North America doesn't make that distinction and so their archaeology depts are generally under "anthropology". Social anthropology also examines human discards and behaviour (like enthoarchaeology does too). There is a distinct overlap between archaeology and social anthropology, just how big that gap is differs according to which country you are in.
