Since the position "Scribe" was a well documented job servicing almost all of the society I think the low %s in the above posts (5% literate) is probably correct.
One would go to a scribe to write any correspondance for oneself, and pay a small fee for this.
Interestingly this job survived down through the late middle ages (in Europe most Churches & monestaries had scribes who could write for small fees) and really only died out when education became much more widespread.
So take a stab at l=under 10% Hans, maybe less than 1/2 that.
