yeah....well was it over anything in particular...like a debate, moderation issue or something?by darkuser - Coffee Shop
Well i personally hate taking things over the top. Evolution is something that should be acknowledged intellectually and not preached like it's desparate for attention. That said, i do actually think there is something to celebrate. Of all the major scientific discoveries, i personally think evolution is the most remarkable, beautiful, and one which had the greatest social and philosophicalby darkuser - Laboratory
I sometimes wonder why board members here feel the need to "leave"....i use dozens of different forums and boards on the internet and i post on them when i see the odd interesting thread...i've never considered "leaving" because i don't consider myself as having joined...only participated....it's just something to do on the internet... btw....did he leave forby darkuser - Coffee Shop

...but "naming" is what the Greeks did a lot and it was a huge part of their genius and achievements....it is very easy to have government, art and architecture, but naming and recognising democracy, tyranny, artistic styles and more importantly your own weaknesses is something else entirely....the Greeks went "bonkers" over it...by darkuser - Ancient History
How did i manage to miss this post!....i saw Kat's sticky and wasn't too sure which post it was referring to. Like everyone else, i'm deeply saddened by this news. Kenuchelover (the meaning of which i remember he explained to me) was indispensable to this board, and particularly to the discussions on anthropology, biology and American history. His contributions here have greatly edby darkuser - Ancient History
thx to this thread i had to go and revise my grammar.... I don't think there's anything wrong with that sentence.... "is linking" is present continuous and "linking something more to something" is using "more" as an adverb to modify the verb "linking"......note that when "more" is used as an adverb to modify a "verb", itby darkuser - Humanities
erh...Anthony i never said meteorology isn't a science or that the degree isn't scientific....i just said the bachelors degree alone does not make that person a scientist. I know a number people who would be appalled by that claim....millions of people have BScs and they are not scientists....hell my friend has one and he's a banker....by darkuser - Laboratory

Can't the same be said for the ID movement? Surely you don't consider that censorship....by darkuser - Laboratory
I'm sorry Anthony, a bachelors degree does not make you a scientist. A lot of us here have one including myself and i you don't find us claiming to be scientists, engineers etc.by darkuser - Laboratory

I can't really stick around because I'm having my exams, one of which btw happens to be environmental management Just briefly though, i don't quite understand why the article was entitled "wild weather".....i mean from climate change we can expect hot places to be colder and dry places to be wetter which of course would cause all sorts of problems, but is there any reby darkuser - Laboratory
Thx for the pdf Tommi. I was thinking though that there might be some hyperbole concerning the true effects of climate change. A few weeks back i saw a television programme which blamed weather events like unusual and out-of-place tornadoes or large hailstones on global warming...it was almost hinting at some impending global disaster.....and yes i am thinking of a certain movie starring Dennis Qby darkuser - Laboratory
This is a subject members of this board can never quite agree upon. We all seem to agree that ID's garbage and that the pyramids weren't inspired by some 12'000 yr old lost civilisation, so why is there no consensus on this? It's not just here too, i've seen this subject discussed on the news and there's always one or two people coming out to say that scientists do nby darkuser - Laboratory
Would you happen to know why books like these....particularly not-so-popular archaeology books are that expensive???by darkuser - Ancient History
That was a swipe at SETI and their chances of detecting a signal, i'm sure I think you underestimate the kind of excitment extraterrestrial visitation would generate in the scientific community. When the UFO phenonmenon was at it's height in the late 80s and early 90 (not long before x-files started ) there were panels, meetings and surveys set up to investigate the subject, particuby darkuser - Laboratory
I wouldn't equate evolution with history Rebby, and i don't think a lot of people do. They are two very different things...evolution by itself and as a theory does not seek to teach people prehistory...that is in fact paleontology, and even paleontology does not deal with abstract historical details....the study of how or if a dinosaurs goes to the toilet is not the same as the study ofby darkuser - Ancient History

Thing is, movies inspire more than they educate. Who knows...maybe Mayan archaeology might gain from all this....by darkuser - Ancient History
Merc, one thing about extraterrestrials visiting earth is that it has enormous implications for us. Just like the scientists of the 70s who wanted to know the physics which enabled Uri Gellar to bend his spoons, scientists would in fact swarm to UFO landing and viewing sites if they for a second thought it had any basis in fact. The reason they don't is because they do not consider them as hby darkuser - Laboratory
Regarding Ronald's two links, wikipedia may in fact be more accurate. Dave has pointed out why the second link may be biased and i'd personally take anything about the Phoenicians published a century ago with a grain of salt. We know virtually nothing about them still. We have little documentation concerning the first millenium and the archaeological record of Iron Age Phoencia is almosby darkuser - Ancient History
Well, it's not difficult to find less favourable opinions of the dinosaurid.... Quote from article: "The reason that we humans have the body shape that we do is not – I think – because it’s the ‘best’ body shape for a smart, big-brained biped to have, it is instead the result of our specific lineage’s evolutionary history. Given that, so far as we know, the humanoid body shapeby darkuser - Laboratory

This is of course a very well-known argument. People have even equated belief in extraterrestrials to religion (which is on many levels valid), and have called SETI unscientific, but isn't this equivalent to saying they exist in spite of the fact that we haven't properly looked...by darkuser - Laboratory
I found clips of this on youtube and then realised that the whole thing was available online.
