When I first visited Giza, I was a complete novice in the area of Egyptian historical studies. I was still suffering from the same malady that has afflicted CK (the idea that we know nothing about the builders, blah blah blah).

When I entered my first mastaba in the western cemetery, I was blown away. I went in tomb after tomb and found not just scraps, but volumes of texts that directly related to the afterlife function of these structures. The pyramid didn't exist in a vacuum, these people knew Khufu, they were his children, or his family, or his priests, nobles or officials. These were real people, with real lives that were documented on these tomb walls.

It was a jarring experience. I realized on that day that I had been seriously misled by the purveyors of alternative history. I realized on that day that I didn't even know what I didn't know about the subject. It was humbling, to say the least.

I've tried to convey that lesson here as best I can. I think some people appreciate it. Others... well, you know. They may need to pony up and buy their own tickets so they can examine, first hand, the nature of the structures, the similarities in construction styles and techniques between pyramids at different sites and tombs at the same site.

Having someone tell me I don't know what I've seen with my own eyes, touched with my own hands... it's downright offensive.
