The Hellenes certainly did know about volcanoes and their territories included many. Here's what's in modern Greece, a fairly pale selection of Hellas:

The reason that people create words has nothing to do with numbers. New words enter our language every day, as they did back then. They are combinations of other words "something" for "some thing", "awful" for "awe full" (yes, that's where it comes from.) Some are made up simply for the sound ("bling.")

There is no overseer of vocabulary who sits down with scribe and writing surface and toys with letters until they come up with a word that matches a numerological concept.
