The origin is likely from pictures representing words, as in Sumerian cuneiform scripts (circa 5000+ bp) having pictographic heritage of hieroglyphics, then phoneticizing the picture, then acrophonics. Sumerian cuneiform characters ceased to be pictorial while Egyptian hieroglyphs remained so.<<
I was not talking about writing in general because we find linear symbols that form writing earlier on at Greece and in the Balkans in general. I was asking about the alphabet as a writing system consisting of discrete symbols for vowels and consonants.
