They don't come out and say it but Hawass IS the problem in Egyptology today. He not only stands in the way of gathering critical data but he won't let data already gathered be released. He screams about damage to the pyramids as noninvasive testing is not allowed and he drills holes throughout without even sampling the air within.
I'm impressed that they are planning more discussion about the sand in the passage walls. This sand contains vaterite which is an highly unstable form of calcium carbonate. It is produced in warm springs and geysers and should not be in the Great Pyramid. If it came from outside it should have broken down. It may be the smoking gun.
This new scanning is of critical importance afterall since they are gathering so much more data and using more computing power to analyze it. I'm disappointed it will be so slow once it gets started and very seriously doubt Hawass will allow the results to even be published since they will fly in the face of all Egyptological theories about the great pyramids and their builders. He has said before that results will not be published when they do not coincide with existing theory. All scientific testing to date has shown current theory is wrong and this will never change.
I get more pessimistic with each passing year that scientists will ever be allowed to get the evidence to solve the mysteries. Egyptologists have a choke hold on what gets done and what gets released and they don't like data because it doesn't agree with theory. I often think it can't be known until Egyptology is disproven, which might require decades, or they are removed from oversight of the study of ancient Egypt. What is needed is scientists who hold preservation, Egypt, and discovery as being all important. We need to apply modern technology and science to the great pyramids systematically and methodically. This means gathering data and exploring anomalies while not suppressing data even from Peers as Egyptology is currently doing with the infrared results.
