Cladking,
The various different versions of Herodotus II:127 have already been discussed.
There aren't any underground chambers in Khafre's pyramid. Therefore, Herodotus' comments about where Khufu's body was supposed to lie apply to Khufu's pyramid only (for details, see my previous post).
As stated above, I'm wondering now whether the canal/waterway legend mentioned by Herodotus' informants could be a far-off memory of Ro-She-Khufu ... and the shifting levels of the Nile itself, depending on the season.
> no ancient author referred to any great pyramid as a tomb
Yes, Herodotus did (and see also the authors mentioned in Hans' post). And so did Inspector Merer, with his references to "Akhet Khufu."
< the day to day life of the actual builders and those who got their hands dirty every day; ie- the real people of ancient Egypt.
Yes, real people, like Merer, Dedi and the rest ... Not to mention the aperu responsible for the stonework of the GP (their names visible in the relieving chambers on blocks for which a particular gang was responsible - for details, see Roth, "Phyles," p. 126).
