Greetings,

I was wondering if anybody here could help me answer a translation problem I’ve been having.

More specifically, comparing Budge’s translation of Spell 68 in the Book of The Dead immediately below to Allen’s translation of it further below, I was wondering why Budge, and apparently Maspero and Sethe before him, translated the glyphs on page 254 Col. a of his dictionary as “the god Petra,”, whereas Allen translated them as “the roof and the twin peepholes,” considering that (a) one example has a goddess determinative (b) another has a god determinative, and (c) Allen evidently parenthesized his translation because he wasn’t convinced it was correct.

Budge — The doors of heaven are opened for me, the doors of earth "are opened for me, the bars and bolts of Seb are opened for me, and the first temple hath been unfastened for me by the god Petra.

Allen — Opened for me are the double doors of the sky; opened for me are the double doors of the earth. Opened for rne are the bolts of Geb; exposed for me are (the roof and the twin peepholes).

Budge referenced Maspero’s "Les Inscriptions des Pyramides de Saqqarah and Sethe’s "Die aliagyptischen Pyramidentexte . . ." for the other examples of the glyphs he shows, and I managed to find those on-line here [goo.gl] and here [goo.gl] respectively, But I couldn’t find the glyphs in either.

I was therefore wondering if anybody knew where I could find the glyphs in these works, and/or a hieroglyphic version of Spell 68, ideally with a translation.

Thanks very much in advance for any insight anyone can give me into this problem. smiling smiley
